Ellen Cogen: Bio

I began my musical life as a classical musician, beginning piano studies at 5, and cello at 10. I was always drawn to a variety of musical genres and instruments, but something finally "clicked" when I started studying voice while a senior at the University of Massachusetts. My world, musical and otherwise, opened up to me. I went on to earn a Master's Degree in Voice Performance from The New England Conservatory of Music, and now make vocal music, whether performing, teaching, composing, or conducting, my primary focus. I am delighted to be teaching jazz voice and directing the choral and musical theater ensembles in the wonderful gem of a music department at Holyoke Community College.

Jazz singing was an inevitable, though not always clear destiny for me. I fell in love with the songs watching old movies as a young girl. The art of improvisation is, to me, irresistable, and the purest essence of musical expression.
